Lou Ellen Sass, 93 of Temperance, MI, and formerly of Toledo, died Saturday, September 6, 2014, in Hickory Ridge of Temperance. Born April 12, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of Hugh and Beatrice (Johnson) DeFrees. SHe attended the former Whitney High School and Libbey High School in Toledo, she married Norman C. Sass on June 15, 1940 in Bowling Green. He preceded her in death on January 18, 2001. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Toledo, F.O.E., 2562, Maumee. She enjoyed dancing, fairs, festivals, amusement parks, sewing, chaperoning for Highland Park Teen Town, being a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Brownie leader, being a nanny and was the welcome wagon for new neighbors.
She is survived by her loving children; Nancy (Emil) George, Dale (Janet) Sass, Carol Hall, Dean (Rhonda) Sass and Marcy (Joseph) Hurst. 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Hugh Jackson DeFrees, Jr. Son-in-law, Fred Hall and grandson, Tom Soules.
Visitation will be from 2-7 pm Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd. (at Jackman) Temperance, MI, where funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm.
